NORTHERN FRONTIER ADVENTURES FLY - IN  FISHING / BEAR HUNTING
IN NORTHERN SASKATCHEWAN, CANADA

Welcome to the Northern Frontier!  Our camp features fishing and hunting on 5 different lakes; Dufferin, Virgin, Westgate, Monk and Dicks Lake.  These are the lakes for outstanding fishing for Lake Trout, Northern Pike and Walleye. The scenery is spectacular and the shore lunches are great!

Each spring the ice usually comes off the water between May 20 and June 1.  For about 4 weeks after the ice is gone the Lake Trout are still up on the surface.  Once the water warms up a bit, the Lake Trout move to deeper water.  Northern Pike choose warmer bays where bait fish are abundant. Walleye assemble in specific areas, these areas change a little depending on water temperature, time of day and year.  Our clients fish in the months of June through September.

Our camp policy is  barbless hooks, along with a limited number of clients will maintain a healthy fish population for years to come.  All trophy size fish must be released. Eat as much fish as you like while you’re in camp.  NOTE:  We will allow a few fillets of fish to be taken home with you.  A small cooler will be provided.

Our boats are 16 footers with 15 hp engines.  They are equipped with life jackets, paddles and gas.

The land around Dufferin Lake has steep hills along some areas of the shoreline creating drop-offs to the lake.  Virgin, and Wesgate Lakes are somewhat flatter. Dicks Lake is surrounded by hills.  The forest around the camp and lakes has blueberry patches.  In the fall you can enjoy an exquisite snack whenever you dock your boat.  Dufferin Lake is located north of the 57th parallel and is approximately 150 miles north east of Fort McMurray, Alberta.  Dufferin Lake is in Northern Saskatchewan, accessible only by float plane, with flight time being approximately ¾ of an hour.

This is a new camp with our first year being 2001.  We are the only camp on the lakes, no other anglers utilize these lakes, which allow you to be one in a handful to hunt or fish these untouched waters.

BLACK BEAR HUNTING

We offer bear hunting on a limited basis, only 12 hunters per year.   There is an excellent population of huge black and colored bears, as this area has had limited hunting.  We take archery, rifle and muzzleloader hunters.  Our spring hunting trips also include fishing.  Fishing is non- guided which works well as we have small lakes.

You may see other magnificent wildlife during your stay in the Northern Frontier, such as moose, caribou, squirrels, wolves and otters.  Birds you may see include Canada Geese, ducks, grouse, eagles and Whiskey Jacks.

HOUSEKEEPING AND AMERICAN PLAN ACCOMMODATION

Our camp is located on a scenic point on Dufferin Lake.  We will meet you at the camp and help you to settle in.  Our camp is quiet and relaxing.  Meals are prepared at times when it’s convenient for everyone.

The lodge will accommodate up to 10 fishermen / hunters with comfortable, 2 single beds per room.  Our lodge is fully modern, hot and cold running water, flush toilet, shower and wood burning stove. You’ll be very cozy considering your remoteness.   The lodge also has a generator, stove, fridge, freezer, and washer, dryer and satellite TV and e-mail.  A satellite phone is also in camp in case of emergencies. All meals are home cooked and you can eat as much as you like.  A full breakfast is served in the morning.  Lunch is a shore lunch. Dinner is served at a prearranged time. If you are on a special diet or have special needs please let us know. We will try to accommodate you.

You are responsible for providing your own alcoholic beverage of choice.

-  Bright lures for casting and trolling (2-5 inch lengths), 1/8 or 1/4 ounce jigs (walleye)
-  Bring barbless hooks (only the back hook can be operable, the front ones need to
be squeezed shut on gang hook arrangements.) 30# test snap swivels for walleye
-  Fishing licenses are pre-purchased and ready upon arrival.

CATCH AND RELEASE

For Catch and Release fishing to be effective, the fish must survive after being released.  An angler must be respectful, careful and use common sense when handling fish.  By following some of these simple guidelines, survival rates of released fish can be maximized.

EQUIPMENT

Needle nose pliers to aid in quickly removing your hook.  These pliers can be used to make a hook barbless.

A pair of wet cotton, wool or other soft gloves should be used when handling a fish - if these are not available make sure your hands are wet.  Boga grips are supplied with each boat so the fish don’t have to be touched.

If needed, a landing net can be used to lift fish from the water.  Shallow, small mesh nets that have rubber or soft mesh are best to use as fish don’t get entangled in excess mesh.  The fish can be quickly removed from the net and returned to the water.

HANDLING

Try to minimize your handling of each fish.  Ideally fish should be released without lifting them from the water.

Never touch a fish’s eyes or gills as they can be easily damaged.

Never use rough gripping gloves or holding devices to lift fish that will be released.  The slippery coating on fish protects them from infections and disease.  Rough gloves can easily remove this protective layer.

Lift the fish with the boga grip.

RELEASING FISH

Hold a fish upright in the water until it is fully revived and able to actively swim away.   Move the fish in an S pattern allowing water to run through its gills.

Use common sense when releasing fish - if the fish is bleeding or cannot be revived, count that fish for your shore lunch.

NORTHERN FRONTIER ADVENTURES POLICIES

All our hunts are fair opportunity.  We will make every effort to ensure Your hunt is as enjoyable and successful as possible.  The actual Hunting is up to you and your guide.

Be careful with your rifle while in camp and hunting. This means thee should never be a bullet in the chamber unless you are ready to shoot. Having bullets in the magazine or chamber while in vehicles or on quads is illegal.

The consumption of alcoholic beverages prior to or while in the field hunting or fishing is prohibited.

Your rifle should be in good shape and sighted in. Bring about 40 rounds of ammunition. We highly recommend sighting in your rifle at camp. There is a place in camp to sight in your rifle. Target practice in the field should only be done if necessary and only if your guide has picked out an appropriate target.

Our goal is to ensure that you take home a trophy that you will be happy with. You should trust our guide's judgment as to the quality of animal you're looking for, as they are the professionals. Ultimately, the choice is yours. You guide will explain to you as to what type of animal should be expected.

We will move clients if their spot appears to be quiet. We will not make a habit of this, as the past reflects our best trophies has been taken by the PATIENT hunter.

Every effort must be made to locate a wounded animal.  Our policy is that if a client shoots an animal and wounds it, we will make every effort to track it.
DO NOT LEAVE YOUR STAND after a shot has been taken!  Radio your guide Regardless if you think you missed the animal or not.

HUNTING REGULATIONS

Saskatchewan Wildlife Regulations allow that youths 12 - 15 years may purchase a game license, after graduating from a Firearm Safety/Hunter Education course, by having their parent or guardian complete the consent portion of the Saskatchewan Wildlife Habitat Certificate. While hunting, the youth must be under direct supervision of an adult 18 years or older.

IT IS VIOLATION TO:

or white.  You must also wear head gear in any of these colors, except for white.
